Lake Township, January 25, 2019 – Sophmore year, Jake Maranville was mid game for the Lake Blue Streaks basketball team when he took a tumble near the edge of the court. He bumped into the wheelchair of a gentleman watching the game. After the play, Jake circled back to check on him and to appologize. Little did Jake know that in that moment, he would gain special friendship. It was a run in that was truly meant to be.
The man that Jake had run into was Steve Breit. Well known in the Lake Township community due to his time and tenure with the Lake Local School District. Mr. Breit had previously been diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Over the past two years Maranville and Breit have become great friends, there families have become close as well. (https://eberinsurance.com/)
As a Senior, Maranville is Captain of the basketball team and a member of the National Honor Society. When Jake found out that he needed to complete a project for the National Honor Society and knew exactly what his project should be. Jake created a t-shirt campaign for Breit and to raise awareness for the disease impacting him. Selling shirts to the community, fellow students and their families as well as involving rivals on the court. Jake approached Louisville High School’s basketball team regarding their February 19th game against them. They were happy to get involved. All players will wear these special shirts during warmups at that game to show their support for not just Jake’s project but for Steve Breit as well. Proceeds from Jake’s project will benefit the Northern Ohio Chapter of the ALS Association. Jake will also show a brief video at halftime to raise awareness. If you’re interested in ordering a shirt please email Jake at jakemaranville@ymail.com. If you’d like to make a donation toward Jake’s cause, you can send a check made out to Lake Local Schools to Lake High School at 10250 Lake Center St. NW in Uniontown.
We are proud of how Jake has chosen to lead this project and wish him the best of luck and success!! Congratulations on a job well done. Thanks for coming in today to talk to us about your work!
